The Arizona racetrack of Rillito, the first quarter horse track in USA, is a 5 furlong track and was opened in 1953 and operated for 14 years. The track was the brainchild of 2 former University of Arizona students, Ruken Jelks and Mel Haskell. In 1967 the track was renamed Tucson Turf Club.

In 1996 Rillito Park was recognized by the American Quarter Horse Association’s American Quarter Horse Foundation as a Historical Marker.
